Zemichael Gebeyehu: A Multi-Disciplinary Engineer at Apple
Zemichael Gebeyehu, a remarkable engineer, is currently employed as a robotics engineer at Apple. His journey, however, began at Lehigh University, where he initially majored in mechanical engineering and minored in aerospace engineering.
Intrigued by the broadening technical expertise and interdisciplinary interests that engineering education offers, Zemichael expanded his academic focus to include minors in economics and electrical engineering. This decision was influenced by the desire to specialize in flight systems, propulsion, or space technologies, complemented with knowledge in electronics, control systems, and electromagnetics, and understanding the financial, managerial, or policy aspects related to engineering projects and industries.
During his time at Lehigh University, Zemichael was actively involved in various experiential learning opportunities. He served as the lead for the Lehigh Underwater Robotics team, an undergraduate research assistant at the Unsteady Flow Laboratory, and the founder and president of Lehigh University's Space Initiative (LUSI). His projects ranged from Mars rovers and nanosatellites to underwater robots and UAVs.
Zemichael's dedication to engineering and academics earned him membership in prestigious societies such as Tau Beta Pi, National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), African Students Association (ASA), and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) at Lehigh University.
In 2024, Zemichael graduated from the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science at Lehigh University. His employment at Apple was facilitated by his background in robotics and an internship at the tech giant. Today, Zemichael works on mechatronics and robotics problems that enable Apple products and technologies.
Reflecting on his Lehigh University days, Zemichael fondly recalls the first time his team at the university Space Initiative (LUSI) was able to drive their Mars rover. The experience, he says, is the best memory from his time at the university. Working on impactful technologies and products that enrich people's lives remains the best thing about his job at Apple.
