Plastic Waste Memorial on Kettwiger Street Encourages Environmental Awareness

In a unique and impactful initiative, a sculpture has been installed as a memorial on the privacy screen of the Stadtwerkepark on Kettwiger Street. This sculpture, part of the "Plastic Waste Memorial" project, is a testament to the power of upcycling waste and fostering creativity in children and young people.

Funded by the NRW Ministry of Family Affairs, the project explores the fusion of waste and nature, drawing attention to the problem of plastic waste while promoting environmental awareness and responsibility. The sculpture, a memorial, is intended to encourage passersby to linger and reflect, serving as an educational platform for waste management and environmental issues.

The project, which is part of artist Dirk Krüll's existing art installation series "Plastic Army", saw children and young people actively involved in the creation of art from waste. Initial ideas for the installation were developed collaboratively between the artist and the participants.

The process of creating the sculpture emphasized the upcycling of waste, with participants collecting and cleaning their own waste during the project. A neighborhood tour with tongs and buckets was conducted to sensitize participants about waste handling and city pollution. Through this hands-on approach, the project aimed to demonstrate that individuals can influence societal problems through their actions.

The project served as an opportunity for children and young people to learn about waste management, delving into themes of environment, waste, and waste management through art. By making the problem of plastic waste tangible and engaging, the "Plastic Waste Memorial" project aims to inspire better waste management habits and foster a sense of environmental responsibility among its participants.

The sculpture, now a permanent fixture in the Stadtwerkepark, stands as a reminder of the impact of plastic waste and the role each individual can play in addressing this issue. For those visiting Düsseldorf, a trip to Kettwiger Street offers a chance to witness this thought-provoking art installation and contribute to the ongoing conversation about plastic waste and sustainability.
