UWE Bristol Proposes Free Bus Travel for Young People

UWE Bristol's Dr Kiron Chatterjee has proposed a strong case for extending free bus travel to all young people, benefiting them socially, economically, and environmentally. The Association of Welfare and Community Organizations (AWO) has also recommended this as part of their input to a government commission.

Currently, limited transport options hinder young people's activities. Bus services are particularly crucial for 17-20-year-olds. To address this, the AWO suggests expanding free or discounted bus fares for under 18s across the UK, ending the postcode lottery for students and job seekers. This would also encourage millennials, who are less likely to drive, to use public transport.

Dr Chatterjee recommends government-led investment in walking and cycling to complement this. Cross-government action is needed to ensure safe and well-connected infrastructure for all young people. Prioritizing youth in transport spending would provide better access to affordable, good quality transport.

Extending free bus travel to young people, along with investment in walking and cycling infrastructure, could significantly improve their access to education, work, and leisure opportunities. This would require cross-government action and prioritization of youth in transport spending.
