Robert "Bob" Corbett, Prominent Alumnus and Banking Pioneer, Passes Away

Robert "Bob" Corbett, a distinguished alumnus of Park University and a prominent figure in the banking industry, passed away on March 31, 2025. The university has lamented his demise, highlighting his strong connection to the institution as an honorary trustee and his notable contributions in his professional field.

Born in 1916, Corbett showed early promise, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Park University in 1938. However, his career path took a different turn as he initially intended to become a teacher but decided to pursue a career in banking.

Corbett's banking career began in earnest in 1954 when he was elected associate vice president at the Wornall Bank in South Kansas City, Mo. He would later become the founding director and chief executive officer of the same bank in 1957. The Wornall Bank was a significant part of Corbett's life, and it was purchased in 1973 by United Missouri Bancshares Inc. (now UMB).

Corbett's tenure at UMB was marked by numerous achievements. He retired as chairman emeritus from the bank in 1987 but continued to serve as an advisory director of the south region at UMB until 2004. His dedication to the bank and the industry was evident in his long and successful career.

Corbett's contributions to Park University were equally significant. He served on the university's Board of Trustees for a decade, retiring as chair in 1990. During this time, he also served as Alumni Association president from 1952-1953 and as commencement speaker at the university in 1986. In 1998, he was a Founders Day honoree at the university.

In 2010, Corbett's legacy was honored with the naming dedication of the Robert P. and Mary Alice Corbett Stairway at Park University. He was also a charter member of Park University's Howard Bailey McAfee Heritage Society.

During World War II, Corbett served in the U.S. Army Finance Office of the 86th Infantry Division in both the European and Pacific Theatres. For his service, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Park University in 1963.

Our thoughts are with Bob's children, Robert and Marcia, during this difficult time. Bob's memorial service will take place at John Knox Village Chapel, Lee's Summit, Mo, on Friday, April 6, at 3 p.m.

Corbett's life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and service. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations at Park University and in the banking industry.

In the twilight of his life, Robert "Bob" Corbett, the eminent alumnus of Park University, remained active in education and self-development, serving as an advisory director of the south region at UMB until 2004. His dedication to the institution and his professional field, including general news about his various roles and achievements in banking, have left an indelible mark that continues to inspire future generations.
