Uniting in Harmony: A Joint Address

The Oceti Sakowin, or Great Sioux Nation, hold their oral tradition in high regard, considering it a shared legacy of the entire tribe. This tradition, passed down through generations, has persisted despite centuries of colonial pressure and attempts at genocide, resulting in the loss of culture, language, and history.

In recent years, technology has been used to protect and conserve this oral tradition. Interestingly, western science is beginning to recognise that many of their latest "discoveries" were actually mentioned in tales told by Indigenous Peoples many millennia ago.

One such example can be found in the petroglyphs of the Santee Dakota, a division of the Oceti Sakowin. These rock carvings, deeply tied to their spiritual beliefs, oral histories, and cultural preservation, function as visual symbols that encode important stories, teachings, and events central to the Dakota identity and worldview.

Petroglyphs among the Santee Dakota are part of a wider Indigenous tradition of rock art in the Great Plains and surrounding regions. They often represent cosmological elements, clan symbols, or significant historical occurrences, and they serve as mnemonic devices helping to transmit oral traditions across generations.

The significance of these petroglyphs lies in their role as a complementary visual record that reinforces spoken stories and ceremonies. They can symbolize spiritual beings, natural phenomena, or legendary ancestors, thus embedding moral and historical lessons in a tangible, enduring medium. Through storytelling accompanied by these images, Dakota elders teach younger generations about their identity, values, and responsibilities.

These petroglyphs are central to the cultural preservation of the Santee Dakota, maintaining continuity with the past despite centuries of disruption due to colonization and forced displacement. They are often found at sacred or historically significant locations, underscoring their role in place-based identity and spiritual practice.

The petroglyphs at Pipestone National Monument in Minnesota, located within their ancestral homelands, date back to 200 AD-1150 BC. At least 79 petroglyphs on 35 slabs of Sioux quartzite were acknowledged at one time. Some of these petroglyphs have been revealed to depict gestures used in Universal Native Sign Language.

Elders among the Oceti Sakowin are valued for their knowledge and experience. They acknowledge that they are not the "end-all be-all" of Tribal knowledge, and storytelling is a collaboration between the teller and their listeners. The stories of a People belonged to each and every one of them. They were all considered valid.

In the oral tradition among the Oceti Sakowin, knowledge is earned through struggle, persistence, and making good choices. Petroglyphs were often used as a framework for storytelling. The Santee Dakota believe that knowledge is a sacred gift, and it is their responsibility to pass it down to future generations.

Thus, the petroglyphs of the Santee Dakota within the Oceti Sakowin are historically significant visual elements that enrich oral tradition and serve as vital tools for cultural preservation, connecting the present to ancestral heritage and spiritual beliefs.

  1. The petroglyphs among the Santee Dakota, a division of the Oceti Sakowin, are not only visual symbols of their cultural preservation but also serve as mnemonic devices, reinforcing important stories and teachings essential to their identity and worldview.
  2. In the Oceti Sakowin's oral tradition, education-and-self-development occurs through collaboration, with elders passing down sacred knowledge to future generations, emphasizing personal-growth and the importance of making good choices.
  3. Art and culture within the Oceti Sakowin community, as demonstrated by the intricate petroglyphs, play a crucial role in education and self-development, offering valuable tools for the preservation and continuity of their identity, values, and spiritual practices.
