Uncover the FCBA Tutoring Program: A Flushing-focused Initiative Committed to Delivering High-Quality Education for Every Scholar
The FCBA Tutoring Program, a student-led initiative under the Flushing Business Chinese Association (FBCA), is making a significant impact in the Flushing community. This tutoring and volunteering service offers educational support to students of all ages, focusing on subjects like math, verbal skills, and standardized tests.
Located at The New York Tutoring Center, the program provides a cost-effective alternative for families who may not be able to afford expensive tutoring services. The core educational services include personalized academic tutoring, mentoring, and additional educational assistance tailored to meet the needs of the students served.
Emily Lin '26, a junior at Bronx Science and the CEO of the FCBA Tutoring Program, leads a team of dedicated high school volunteers who tutor and mentor younger students. These volunteers are rewarded for their accumulated hours, fostering a sense of community engagement and personal growth.
One of the program's key offerings is its ESL program, which focuses on teaching sentence structure, reading comprehension, and pronunciation to students learning English as a second language. Additionally, the program offers tutoring services for various subjects, including NYS standardized exams, SHSAT, and STEM subjects like Chemistry and Algebra 1.
Middle schoolers in the program are taught topics in New York's standardized State Assessments and given test-taking strategies to help them excel. The program also provides preparatory courses for students, including a Homework Help course, and holds high school, college, and career showcases and expos at The New York Tutoring Center.
The FCBA Tutoring Program collaborates with other organizations, hosting events such as the 29th Annual Flushing Chinese Business Association Lunar New Year Parade. It caters to students from Pre-K to 12th grade and operates on Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Min Liu, an ESL tutor and a current ninth-grader at Bayside High School, stated that the program helps students and volunteers develop partnership and presentation skills. The program's emphasis on community engagement and academic growth makes it an invaluable resource for families in the Flushing community who may not have the financial means to give their children all the necessary tools for success.
