U.S. Medical Workers Urge End to Israeli Military Support After Witnessing Gaza Devastation
American organizations, including Médecins Sans Frontières and UNICEF, are volunteering medical aid in Gaza. Meanwhile, the U.S. has approved billions in security assistance for Israeli military operations. A letter, addressed to former President Trump, urges an end to this support, signed by American medical workers who witnessed the devastation firsthand.
Dr. Kathleen Gallagher, one of the signatories, witnessed widespread destruction and displacement in Gaza. She treated patients, with around 45% suffering from explosive injuries and nearly half being gunshot victims, many shot while seeking aid. Since October 7, 2023, Israeli forces have killed over 65,000 Palestinians. The health system in Gaza is severely impacted, with over 1,500 health workers killed and 780 attacks on ambulances and field hospitals. Only 14 hospitals provide partial services, none fully functioning.
The letter, organized by Dr. Feroze Sidhwa, called on the Trump administration to end U.S. support for Israel's war in Gaza. It was signed by over 150 American medical workers who volunteered there.
The letter highlights the urgent need for the U.S. to reassess its support for Israeli military operations in Gaza, given the devastating impact on the Palestinian population and the health system. Despite these challenges, American organizations continue to provide medical aid, with Médecins Sans Frontières and UNICEF supporting health workers and children in Gaza.
