U.S. Archives Enhances Online Resources for Legislative Research

The Center for Legislative Archives, a division of the U.S. National Archives, has enhanced its online resources and services for researchers. It now offers digitized documents, detailed guides, and a wealth of information on legislative records.

The Center's website features a 'Featured Documents' section, showcasing digitized records. Most holdings are catalogued in the National Archives Catalog, with online access to digitized copies and electronic records. For citation guidance, Chapter 1 of the House and Senate Guides is available.

Finding aids and preliminary inventories for selected records are provided in the research room and are being added to the National Archives Catalog. The Center has published a three-part introductory series on legislative research through History Hub, authored by Karin Ingold. Topics include starting a search, available resources, and researching legislative records at the National Archives.

The Center has also published answers to frequent questions and blog posts on History Hub, such as Senate records relating to American Indian treaties and records of the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Guides for U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, and Joint Committees of Congress records are available, covering the period 1789-1989 and discussing jurisdiction, history, and records created by each committee.

The Center for Legislative Archives continues to expand its online resources, making it easier for researchers to access and understand legislative records. With digitized documents, detailed guides, and a wealth of information, the Center remains committed to supporting legislative research.
