Trump government halts scheduling of fresh visa interviews for foreign scholars

The United States Department of State has introduced a temporary halt on scheduling new visa interview appointments for international students and exchange visitors applying for F, M, and J visas, effective from late May 2025. The move aims to prepare for an expansion of required social media screening and additional vetting procedures at U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide.

The suspension is temporary, with no fixed end date announced yet. The State Department is set to issue further guidance in the coming days or weeks to provide clarity on the duration. The suspension remains in force until new instructions are issued.

New visa interview appointments for F, M, and J visa applicants are not currently being scheduled during the pause. However, already scheduled visa interviews will proceed as planned; applicants with existing appointments are advised to attend them unless notified otherwise.

The pause is primarily intended to implement stricter vetting, including enhanced social media screening, with a focus on applicants involved in campus protests or activities that may concern U.S. authorities.

Students already in the U.S. need not worry as the pause does not affect renewals or visa extensions for those seeking to renew or extend their visas without leaving the country. The policy targets new visa interview appointments abroad, so students inside the U.S. should not experience any interruptions in their current status or renewal processes handled domestically.

This policy development can be traced back to policies initiated during the Trump administration, focusing on national security concerns and monitoring social media activities. Some concerns have emerged regarding potential processing delays and their impact on international student enrollment and mobility.

  1. The temporary halt in scheduling new visa interview appointments for international students and exchange visitors applying for F, M, and J visas may lead to an increased focus on education-and-self-development policies and regulations within the politics and policy-and-legislation sector, as the United States Department of State implements stricter vetting, including online-education monitoring via social media.
  2. The suspension of visa interview appointments could have broader implications for general-news reporting, with attention paid to potential delays in international student enrollment and mobility in the United States, as well as its potential impacts on the learning experiences of students whose visas are affected.
  3. As the United States Department of State prepares to issue further guidance on the duration of the suspension, online-education resources may play a crucial role in facilitating continued learning opportunities for affected international students, helping them stay on track with their academic goals despite the challenges posed by the implementation of new visa policies and procedures.
