Why? Because families like mine are uncommon, while the opposite combination is far more widespread. From an AI's perspective, a family like mine simply doesn't exist in its interpretation of what's typical. This isn't an isolated incident; Bloomberg published a report outlining how AI systematically misrepresents female and non-white CEOs while overemphasizing certain demographics in support roles. This is the chilling reality of generative AI models.

The Bleak Forecast for an AI Downturn

Yet, this pattern has far-reaching implications. AI tools are already being used in the US by companies like DOGE to determine layoffs, and corporations are increasingly relying on these systems for hiring decisions. Because this new material inherits the biases of its AI-born predecessors, we confront a pressing challenge: when this highly prejudiced internet content is employed to educate the following generation of AI models, it will amplify high-probability patterns (like white male CEOs) while belittling the representation of less prevalent truths (like families similar to mine).

In the realm of AI development, if this unchecked feedback loop continues from model to model, the system could crash, a phenomenon known as "model collapse." The parallels to our diminishing world of color could not be more evident: just as we're losing the vibrancy of color in consumer goods, we risk a crash in diversity of thought.

The repercussions reach far beyond technical model collapse in the AI world. While that alone would be catastrophic, the more troubling threat lies in the profound impact on our physical existence. As AI outputs begin to reflect the prejudices of the models that produced them, these warped perceptions will inescapably seep into our material world, creating a disastrous amalgamation of what I refer to as "human knowledge collapse" and a vicious loop of unwanted homogeneity.

So how do we stave off the impending dystopia, knowing that AI is here to stay?

As individuals, we must commit to engaging with primary resources, rather than relying on AI summarizations from tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity. Each time you opt for the original source over an AI digest, you advocate for intellectual diversity, helping shape tomorrow's AI. Refrain from settling for pre-processed knowledge, and instead, employ AI as a tool, not a replacement for your own intellectual work. Parents, it's crucial to ensure your children are equipped with critical thinking skills. Their ability to reason independently will be their most valuable asset in an era where pre-packaged knowledge is readily available.

As a society, we must bolster IP protections for the creators whose collective efforts made AI a reality. Invest in enhancing AI literacy within our education systems, so students can recognize and combat algorithmic monotony. Follow in the footsteps of the banking and insurance industries, where regulations already govern algorithmic decisions, and implement targeted oversight to thwart AI bias in areas like hiring, firing, and consumer choices.

For AI developers, it's crystal clear: design systems that actively counter bias amplification, particularly in autonomous workflows. Develop rigorous evaluation frameworks that test for the balanced representation of various scenarios.
