In June, the green-black state government of Baden-Württemberg initiated an amendment to the school law, requiring schools in the southwest to establish rules for private device use. This move comes amidst a heated debate about phone use at schools, with a primary focus on smartphones and social media as the root cause of mental health issues.

However, the discussion has been criticised for overlooking other contributing factors to these issues. The state student council advocates for a fundamentally different approach to the conversation, urging for a more holistic understanding of the challenges faced by students in today's digital age.

Cem Özdemir, the Green party's top candidate, has proposed a ban on social media for children and young people under 16 years old. Meanwhile, Manuel Hagel, CDU state and parliamentary group leader in Baden-Württemberg, has proposed a general ban on phones during lessons.

The state government's amendment to the school law provides rules for private device use in schools, but does not specify a ban on phones or social media during lessons. This leaves room for interpretation and raises questions about the practical implementation of such rules.

Interestingly, Hagel, who initially opposed a general phone ban during class time, has recently proposed a change of heart, suggesting a comprehensive ban on phones during lessons. This proposal goes beyond the planned school law reform, indicating a shift in the CDU's stance on the issue.

The debate continues, with various parties advocating for different solutions to address the issue of phone use in schools. The outcome of this discussion will undoubtedly shape the educational landscape in Baden-Württemberg for years to come.
