Teacher Iris Filistrucchi expresses a sense of historical significance regarding the flags.

Reinventing History: Balconies, Italians, and the Unseen Tale

In my youth, my mother made me believe that the vibrant Italian flags adorning our balcony were for my birthday celebrations. Little did I know, these flags were emblems of something far grander.

Take a walk with me through the eyes of Iris Filistrucchi, an art aficionado and lifelong Turinese resident, never once leaving her beloved city. Her terrace, just like the streets of hers, carries no signs of the Liberation Day. "As a child, I was enthralled by the sea of flags: on the streets, on the balconies; it was a visual spectacle. Now, I am the first not to hoist one. Every year, I vow to do so, but I never do."

The Whispers of a Forgotten Era: Iris, Gaetano, and the Message of the 25th of April

So, why? "I cannot explain the reason. But I feel a connection to history. I am fiercely proud to be Italian, and I endeavored to imbue that pride in my students."

Where did it all stem from? "My elementary school teacher, Maria Cavallo, was my guiding light. She was a woman of profound intellect, well ahead of her time. She was a partisan, who shared her war tales with us in class."

Did she speak of any specific deeds? "She shared her experiences as a courier, saving lives, and hiding Jews during the war. She even taught us the melodies of the resistance anthems, like ‘Vecchio scarpone’. She was the architect of my entire cultural and emotional existence. It was an unparalleled experience, she was a woman a century ahead."

Was her teaching impactful? "Obviously, she wasn't an extremist. In fact, she treated us all as her children. And my father was also a partisan, and my grandfather, who ran a restaurant, extended a helping hand to those involved in the Resistance."

What was the most crucial lesson she imparted? "She continuously emphasized the importance of women being free and independent. She encouraged us to participate in the nation's life, work, and enjoy our freedom. Hearing these words, as a child, made a profound impact."

Have you met her again? "The last time I happened upon her, by sheer accident, when my son was just a month old. I even invited her to my wedding, a testament to the deep impression she left upon me. I spent countless hours searching for her grave in the cemetery, but in vain."

Did you, too, become a teacher? "Indeed, I did. I aimed to instill in my students the pride of being Italian, the spirit of freedom, and the sense of belonging to a great culture."

And the 25th of April? "I encouraged my students to draw their interpretation of that day. Many drawings depicted streets filled with people joyfully embracing each other. A sense of camaraderie that only a triumph as significant as Liberation can instill."

Is it still the same today? "Traveling, I learned that I inhabit a environment free in every sense. Although we often take it for granted, stepping away just a little reminds us of how valuable freedom truly is. Here, I am allowed to dress as I please, speak my mind, and travel unhindered... Things aren't the same everywhere, and that saddens me."

Is that what makes you so proud? "I wish to remind everyone of the eight decades of peace we have been graced with. In these trying times, we are not as certain of it lasting. And that is a source of concern, like many other factors. But until the end, I will believe that there will be no war in Europe. I can only hope so."

Note:April 25th is Italy's Liberation Day, commemorating the day the Italian Resistance, with the support of Allied forces, liberated northern Italy, including Turin, from Nazi occupation and fascist rule in 1945. The widespread display of Italian flags on balconies and public buildings is a symbolic tribute to the victory of freedom, democracy, and national unity.

These flags not only represent a collective identity and remembrance but also serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made to secure the nation's emancipation. The day often involves commemorative ceremonies involving laying wreaths at monuments dedicated to resistance fighters and visiting historical sites connected to the anti-fascist struggle.
