Syracuse Democratic Party confronts an era of accountability, as asserted by Sharon Owens

In the upcoming general election for Syracuse's mayoral seat, two independents join Sharon Owens, the Democratic nominee, and a Republican contender on the ballot. Despite this competition, Owens remains confident of her chances in November.

Owens, who won resoundingly in the June primary with over 60% of the vote, has a unique background. Although she ran as a Democrat, she previously worked for independent Mayor Ben Walsh. This association with the incumbent administration did not seem to affect her campaign during the primary.

Owens' campaign platform focuses on addressing the needs of the community. She plans to work with the Democratic Party by encouraging collaboration with other major upstate cities to address shared issues such as poverty. Owens aims to engage the local party and broader coalition positively, despite past divisions.

The Syracuse Democratic Party, however, has a recent pattern of backing candidates who ultimately lose primaries. In the current election, the party did not endorse Owens, despite her primary victory. Instead, they supported Common Councilor Pat Hogan, who was one of Owens' opponents.

Despite this, Owens is determined to unite the party. She is having meetings with Democratic Party leadership and other Democrats within the party who want to see change. Owens hopes to be a catalyst to bring Democrats together.

If Owens wins in November, she would make history as the first Black mayor of Syracuse and only the second woman to lead the city. The Syracuse Democratic Party did not endorse the candidate who ran for mayor in the year before the current election, nor the candidate who ran against Ben Walsh in the previous election.

Two Democrats are attempting to get on the Syracuse mayoral ballot as independents, adding to the diversity of candidates in the race. City & State recently caught up with Owens during a Working Families Party event to discuss her campaign, plans for the local party, and what she hopes to see from Gov. Kathy Hochul ahead of the general election.
