Suspicious medical residencies: a practitioner disclosed details about scrutiny during evaluation processes

A total of 268 doctors in Argentina are required to retake the medical residency exam due to suspected fraud, including cheating and possible questions being sold in advance. The scandal has caused a stir in the medical community, with many doctors expressing their dissatisfaction with the government's decision.

The irregularities surfaced after the government noticed suspiciously high exam scores that conflicted with candidates’ academic histories and grade point averages. The issue was initially highlighted by a formal complaint from applicants associated with the University of Buenos Aires, triggering an investigation involving the Ministry of Health and the National Directorate of Migration to verify applicants' documents and identities.

Camila, a recipient of an honor diploma, was filmed during the exam by Fernando Quiroz, the Minister of Health of the City. Despite not seeing any irregularities during the exam, she was among those required to retake the test. However, other wards did not have the same controls.

Lucía, another student, accompanied Camila in her testimony to LN. She believes that retaking the exam would be very unfair. Agustina, another affected professional, scored 86 points on the residency exam. They are all willing to be investigated.

The government annulled the initial exam results due to detected fraud and scheduled a new exam to preserve merit-based access to residency programs, aiming to begin residencies by September 1. The new dates for the oral exam with a jury have been confirmed: Monday, August 4th, and Tuesday, August 5th. Thursday, August 7th, will be the written exam for those who haven’t opted for the oral or for those whose scores and academic averages don’t match.

The score from the Unique Exam is used to create different rankings to determine the order of merit for the allocation of spots. The results of the residency exam will be published on Friday, August 8th.

The scandal notably includes a significant number of foreign-trained doctors, with Ecuadorian doctors among the top scorers under investigation. Some universities, such as the Technical University of Manabí, have publicly rejected unethical behavior and called for thorough investigations.

Evidence such as leaked chat messages linking to the fraud has been presented in media discussions, confirming government action against the alleged cheating. The government has emphasized its commitment to meritocracy and stated that administrative sanctions could apply to those involved. They have also stated that only those who are guilty should pay.

Various contests for vacancies in both the private and public sectors this year are considering the score from the Unique Exam. Despite the ongoing investigation, many doctors are left in limbo, waiting to start their residencies and begin their careers.
