Success of Language Support Pilot Leads to Secured Government Funding
In a significant move for education in Jersey, the Government has announced its commitment to expand a project aimed at supporting every child's development, regardless of their language profile and start in life. The initiative, launched by the charity Every Child Our Future, has seen success in a pilot phase, thanks to initial seed-funding from the Jersey Community Foundation and a multi-year grant of £150,000.
Rob Ward, the Education Minister, expressed his confidence in the project's potential, stating that continued and sustained investment by the Government will allow the model to evolve and embed. The aim of the project is to ensure every child has the support they need to thrive, a goal that seems to be within reach following the project's success.
The pilot, led by Every Child Our Future CEO Cris Lakeman, a former headteacher, placed therapists in five nursery and early years classrooms. The results were promising, with one setting seeing a remarkable rise in children achieving age-appropriate language levels. In just two academic years, the number of children achieving these levels rose from under 50% to 90%.
The success of the pilot has led to its growth into a larger project, with the Jersey Community Foundation CEO, Anna Terry, expressing her pride in having supported this work and seen it grow. The charity has been able to secure funding from the Government of Jersey to scale the model across the island.
The expansion aims to improve communication, language, and literacy outcomes for all children. The project's success suggests that great teaching and early support can meet most children's educational needs, but only if staff are equipped and confident. The initiative provides educators with the tools to support communication and language development in schools.
The collaboration between charities, government, and educators, demonstrated by the pilot, has been instrumental in the project's success. It was the Jersey Climate Action Fund that secured funding for the Government of Jersey to scale the model using experienced speech and language therapists in kindergartens and early school classes.
The project provides an opportunity to prove the effectiveness of the model, which aims to ensure every child, regardless of their language profile and start in life, has the support they need to thrive. With the Government's backing, the project is set to make a significant impact on Jersey's education system, ensuring a brighter future for every child.
