Study Unveils Top EU Regions for Research & Innovation: München, Paris, Madrid Lead

A comprehensive study has delved into the competitiveness of regions worldwide, focusing on research and innovation (R&I) performance. It aims to inform policy initiatives by analyzing economic indicators and provides a unique snapshot of the digital ecosystem's R&I landscape.

Globally, München, Paris, and Madrid emerge as the top three strategic regions. However, when considering only EU regions, Paris and Madrid maintain their positions, thanks to EU-funded projects and collaborations. Central and South Asia, while showing strong innovation performance with numerous R&D organizations, lag behind when ranked solely among EU countries due to their geographical location.

The study highlights regions with potential for innovation and investment. Erlagen and Brussels-Hoofdstad, for instance, lack R&I startup presence. Meanwhile, Stockholm and Dresden are more globally strategic due to international co-patenting activities. Nearly 6,500 research organizations are concentrated around major European cities, with Brussels, Barcelona, Milan, and Zuidoost-Noord-Brabant being pivotal within the EU due to intra-EU project collaborations.

The study underscores the importance of regions like Erlagen and Brussels-Hoofdstad for potential innovation investment. It also emphasizes the global strategic importance of regions like München, Paris, Madrid, Stockholm, and Dresden. With nearly 6,500 research organizations identified, the study offers a comprehensive view of the EU's R&I landscape, supporting policy initiatives aimed at fostering competitiveness.
