Students from Butscha meet with Mayor Frank Stein
In a heartwarming display of international unity, students from School #5 in Bucha, Ukraine, are spending a week in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, as part of a cultural exchange programme. The visit, which began on September 7, 2025, and will last until September 15, is a continuation of a twinning partnership between Integrated Comprehensive School Paffrath in Bergisch Gladbach and School #5 from Bucha.
The programme offers these young students a much-needed respite from the challenging circumstances in their homeland. The exchange focuses on fostering relationships and exchanging ideas, with a specific emphasis on improving language skills, as German is part of the curriculum at School #5.
During their stay, the students will engage in a variety of activities. These include visiting the fire station in Paffrath, working in project groups, and climbing in the climbing hall in Dellbrück. The students are particularly excited about the opportunity to practice and improve their German language skills in Bergisch Gladbach.
The highlight of this year's exchange is the inauguration of Bucha Square on the Zanders site. This special event is scheduled for September 13, 2025, at 11 am, and will be performed by Mayor Frank Stein and his counterpart from Bucha, Anatolii Fedoruk. Further details about the inauguration can be found in press release No. 276.
Many students and teachers from both schools still remember the visit from last year, and the contacts between Ukrainian young people and German host families have continued, leading to lasting friendships. The students were warmly welcomed by Mayor Frank Stein in the Great Council Chamber of the Historic Town Hall in Bergisch Gladbach on September 8, 2025.
The students' visit to Cologne is also part of their programme, providing them with a broader understanding of German culture and history. This cultural exchange not only benefits the students but also strengthens the bonds between the two communities, fostering peace and understanding in these challenging times.
