Strategies for Encouraging a Positive Social Atmosphere in Group Interactions

Building a solid community within a group—be it asylum seekers, refugees, or any diverse group—involves more than just bringing people together. Here's a breakdown of key elements to cultivate a positive, inclusive, and supportive atmosphere that bolsters good mental health.

My six years of running groups with asylum-seeking and refugee communities in Wales have open my eyes to the importance of inclusivity, flexibility, clear group expectations, lived experience, peer support, friendship, and fun.

Inclusivity:

Everyone should feel included and valued within the group. Diversity is beautiful, but without inclusivity, it's impossible to foster a sense of community. Regardless of race, religion, nationality, sexuality, or gender identity, all group members should feel supported and engaged.

Flexibility:

To accommodate the needs of diverse group members, you should be ready to adjust as necessary. If communication issues arise due to language barriers, consider adding activities that don't rely heavily on language, like art or movement-based exercises. Additionally, cater to any physical disabilities, ensuring an environment that's inclusive for all.

Group Expectations:

Constantly remind group members that the space is safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental. Make sure it's clear that intolerance isn't accepted, and everyone should feel empowered to share their thoughts and experiences without fear of being ridiculed or marginalized.

Lived Experience:

Actively engage group members with specific lived experiences in the planning and design of group activities and discussions. By doing so, you ensure relevance and empower group members while creating an inclusive environment that understands and addresses their unique challenges.

Peer Support:

Encourage open discussions on mental health topics where group members can share tips, ideas, and strategies that work for them. This empowers individuals to support each other, fostering a sense of community and promoting good mental health.

Friendship and Fun:

Don't forget to incorporate enjoyable activities into your sessions. Icebreakers, group art projects, or collaborative activities encourage connection, bonding, and trust among group members, making the experience a more enjoyable and memorable one.

By embracing these principles, you can create an engaging, supportive community that benefits the mental health of all group members. Whether you're starting a new group or working with an existing one, these tips can help foster positive change and bring people closer together.

  1. The Mental Health Foundation emphasizes the importance of fostering a supportive community atmosphere, especially within diverse groups, as it positively impacts mental health.
  2. Inclusion and valuing everyone within the group is crucial to create a sense of community, where diversity is celebrated rather than just tolerated.
  3. According to health-and-wellness experts, being flexible and ready to make necessary adjustments to accommodate the needs of diverse group members is essential for building an inclusive community.
  4. Cultivating a safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental space is imperative, ensuring that everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences without fear of ridicule or marginalization.
  5. Encouraging peer support by opening discussions on mental health topics helps group members share strategies that work for them, promoting good mental health and fostering a sense of community.
  6. To address the unique challenges faced by group members, it's essential to engage those with specific lived experiences in planning and designing group activities, reinforcing empowerment and inclusivity.
  7. A combination of educational topics, books from the education-and-self-development genre, and activities like art projects or group exercises can help promote personal growth, making the experience enjoyable and memorable.
  8. Social media platforms can be used to raise awareness about mental health and foster connections between group members, even when they're not physically together.
  9. Learning about mental health, wellbeing, and personal growth can be an ongoing process, and it's important to embrace it, whether through group discussions, books, or entertainment that encourages understanding and empathy.
