South St. Pete Residents Launch Co-op to Combat Food Deserts

A grassroots initiative is gaining momentum in South St. Petersburg, where residents are pushing for a community-run grocery store near me. The push comes following the closure of a Save-A-Lot supermarket in Gulfport, leaving the area without a key grocery option.

The group, One Community Grocery Co-op, aims to open a member-owned store to bring affordable food back to the community. The project is particularly urgent given that, in Pinellas County, one in three low-income neighbourhoods are classified as food deserts, making it difficult for residents to access fresh, healthy food.

With around 150 members already signed up, the co-op needs to reach 300 members to proceed with development. The co-op's success could significantly improve food access in the area, as it would be the first member-owned grocery store in South St. Petersburg.

The establishment of One Community Grocery Co-op could transform food access in South St. Petersburg, addressing the challenges posed by food deserts. With the support of the community, the co-op is well on its way to bringing affordable, fresh food back to the area.
