Significant Pay Rise Coming for Childcare Workers in Ireland
A significant pay rise is on the horizon for staff working in creches and after-school childcare centres. From October 13th, a 10 per cent increase will come into effect, addressing the long-standing issue of low pay in the sector. The new rates, detailed in an Employment Regulation Order to be signed by Minister of State Alan Dillon, will see the minimum wage for early-years educators and school-age childcare practitioners rise from €13.65 to €15 per hour. Lead educators will receive a €1.30 per hour increase, taking their basic rate to €16, while graduate lead educators will be paid at least €17.50 per hour. This agreement, negotiated by relevant labour unions and employers, is expected to improve staff retention. Currently, the sector faces a high staff turnover rate of almost 25 per cent, according to Pobal research. Siptu, representing around 6,000 workers, welcomed the announcement, hailing it as a crucial step towards fair pay. Minister for Children and Equality Norma Foley also welcomed the news, anticipating that the new terms will support career pathways and aid in recruitment and retention efforts. The Government has committed €45 million to fund these pay increases. The new pay deal, effective from October 13th, aims to tackle the long-standing issue of low pay in the childcare sector. With increased wages and Government support, the sector hopes to improve staff retention and attract new talent.
