Shameless Pets Transforms Food Waste into Dog Treats, Plans Nationwide Expansion

Shameless Pets, a Chicago-based startup, is making waves in the pet industry by transforming wasted food into nutritious dog treats. Founded by James Bello and Alex Waite, the company has already rescued 25,000 pounds of food and aims to save 150,000 pounds by the end of 2020.

Bello, a former corporate food buyer for Target, launched Shameless Pets in October 2018. The inspiration struck when he saw his dog Mina negotiating table scraps and later meeting food scientist Alex Waite at a startup event. Together, they created a range of all-natural, grain-free treats boosted with superfoods. The first four flavors include Lobster Roll (Over), Break an Egg, Applenoon Delight, and Blueberried Treasure, made from ingredients like lobster shells, egg shells, and 'ugly' fruit.

Shameless Pets has gained recognition for its innovative approach. It was selected for FoodBytes! Chicago, Rabobank's Terra accelerator program, and was a finalist for the Pet Innovation Challenge and Nestlé Purina's 2019 Pet Care Innovation Prize. The company also became a cohort member of Leap Venture Studio. Despite no records of regional retailers awarding Shameless Pets at launch, the company plans nationwide expansion in 2020, with at least five new flavors in the pipeline.

Shameless Pets, with its unique upcycling approach, is not only creating delicious treats for dogs but also tackling food waste. With ambitious expansion plans and a growing list of accolades, the company is set to make a significant impact in the pet industry.
