September 4, 2024 Update from The Crow's Nest:

Park University is gearing up for an eventful fall semester, with a variety of events, awards, and recognitions taking place over the next few months.

On September 4, the International Center for Music Recital will feature Pianist Tatiana Dorokhova at the Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel. The following day, the Ellen Finley Earhart Department of Nursing will hold its White Coat Ceremony at the same venue.

On September 6, Jack Satter, '71, will receive the Marlowe Sherwood Memorial Service Award from the Park University Alumni Association. Meanwhile, the Dr. Jerzy Hauptmann Distinguished Guest Lecture Series will welcome Dr. Donald Moynihan on September 12, held virtually at noon.

Later in the month, on September 19, the International Talk Like A Pirate Day will be celebrated, and the Art Exhibit: "Studio Illustration: Page Studio 24," by Cody Page, will continue to be on display at the Campanella Gallery (Norrington Center) until October 31.

The Fall I Term ends on October 6, and the Fall Recess, during which no classes are held nationwide but all University offices remain open, will take place from October 7-13.

On October 5, Pianist Ilya Shmukler will perform at the International Center for Music Concert, and on October 14, the Park University Golf Scramble will take place at The National Golf Club of Kansas City.

The Fall II Classes Begin on October 14, and on October 18, the Austin (Texas) Campus Commencement Ceremony will take place at 7 p.m., Austin Stone Northwest Campus Auditorium.

The Camp Pendleton (Calif.) Campus Commencement Ceremony will be held on September 6 at the Pendleton Theater and Training Center.

Park University has been named to Money magazine's "Best Colleges for Online Bachelor's Degree Programs," although the exact criteria used for this ranking are not specified.

Several Park University community members have also received recognition. Jeanette Prenger, '09, was named to the "Top 50 Women Leaders of Missouri for 2024" by Women We Admire. John Hamilton, Ph.D. is the recipient of the 2024 Paul H. Gault Service Award from Park University's Office of Academic Affairs.

Matt Harris, Ph.D., associate professor of political science, has been interviewed by various media outlets, including KCTV, KSHB-TV, KMBZ-FM, and KCUR-FM, to discuss topics such as the Missouri governor's race, the Jackson County (Mo.) prosecutor's race, police funding in Kansas City, Mo., the Taylor Swift effect in national elections, and the Missouri voters passing a statewide amendment that requires the City of Kansas City, Mo., to give 25 percent of its budget to the Kansas City Police Department.

In addition, Master Sgt. Corey Holt, '19, MPA '22, is the recipient of the Park Promising Young Professional Award from the Park University Alumni Association, and Tom Peterman, Ph.D. is the recipient of the Torchlighter Award from the same association.

Park University baseball players Luis Gonzalez and Gilberto Torres were selected by the Puerto Rico Baseball Federation as members of the national U-23 team for the Baseball World Cup.

Moreover, Amber Dailey-Hebert, Ph.D., director of the Faculty Center for Innovation and professor of organizational leadership and adult learning, was invited by Coursera to serve as a subject matter expert and develop a series of content for a short course on "Fostering Psychological Safety."

Lastly, Wen Hsin, Ph.D., professor of information and computer science, presented a paper on "Fostering Creativity and Engagement Through Applied Problem Solving in Online Discrete Mathematics Course" at the International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies.
