SchoolYear Threatened with Boycott by Romanian Education Unions Following Discussions with Government

Romania's education trade unions are escalating their protests against the austerity measures in Law No. 141/2025, which they believe negatively impact teachers' working conditions and the quality of education.

The unions are demanding the resignation of Education Minister Daniel David and the withdrawal of the contested measures, which include spending cuts affecting the education sector. They argue that these measures will lead to a deterioration in school conditions and resources, and will exacerbate existing challenges such as high functional illiteracy rates among students.

The unions' concerns also extend to restrictions on the right to strike, which they claim limit union actions to defending collective economic, social, and professional interests but exclude political expressions.

In a bid to pressure the government, the unions have threatened a general strike and potential boycott of the new school year, which is scheduled to begin on September 1. Union leaders have also resumed protest actions, with further picketing planned, following unsuccessful talks with the government on August 11.

Union officials stress that they are prepared for long-term action if necessary, and vow to continue mobilizing members nationwide. They accuse the government of disregarding their concerns while implementing reforms aimed at meeting deficit targets.

However, no new information about Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan or Education Minister Daniel David was provided regarding their response to the unions' demands. The unions have warned that demonstrations will escalate if the government does not meet their demands.
