School Commencement in NRW: Police Provide Guidelines for Secure Schools

The new school year has begun in Dortmund and Lünen, and the safety of young road users remains a top priority for local authorities. Despite a slight decrease in injuries, accidents on school routes continue to be a concern for the police.

In 2023, six children were injured in school route accidents, while in 2024, the number rose to five. These incidents highlight the need for increased vigilance and proactive measures to ensure the safety of students during their school journeys.

Accidents can be caused by a variety of factors, including weather conditions, time of year, local circumstances, and improper behavior by drivers and pedestrians. Parents play a significant role in influencing traffic behavior in children. Parents can contribute to a safe environment around schools by avoiding driving children to school, known as "parent taxis," which can create dangerous situations, especially at elementary schools.

Instead, parents are encouraged to act as role models for safe road behavior. Wearing bright, reflective clothing or bags is recommended for increased visibility, and bicycles should be in good working order. Wearing a helmet is strongly advised for cyclists.

The Dortmund Police are taking steps to ensure the safety of students. The Traffic Puppet Theater in Westfalenpark, aimed at kindergarten groups and primary school classes, educates children about road safety in a playful manner. Further information can be found at Dortmund Police's website.

Particular attention is required around bus stops, as motorists should be prepared for children suddenly stepping out from between parked buses. Local authorities, organizations such as the Deutsche Verkehrswacht (DVW) and the Zentralverband Deutsches Kraftfahrzeuggewerbe (ZDK), and local municipal administrations are working together to implement traffic safety initiatives.

Journalists with questions can contact Dortmund Police's Theresa Stritzke at 0231/132-1026 or [email protected]. In the city of Dortmund, Case Number 0746 is currently being handled by the local police.

Parents are urged to take an active role in ensuring the safety of their children and other young road users. By working together, we can make our school routes safer for everyone.
