School Closures on September 16, 2025 (Tuesday): Various States Shut Down Schools Due to Heavy Rain and Weather Warnings
Heavy weather and thunderstorms have been forecast across several districts in Telangana, prompting the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a heavy weather warning. The same weather conditions have also led to thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds across all 33 districts of Telangana.
In neighbouring states, parents and students are keeping a close eye on potential last-minute school closures due to the weather. As of now, no official school holiday has been announced for September 16 in Telangana or Tamil Nadu, but updates are being closely monitored.
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, covering six districts on September 16, expanding to seven districts on the same day, and extending to 22 districts on September 17 and 11 districts on September 18.
Elsewhere in India, the IMD has also issued a yellow alert for several districts in Tamil Nadu. In Maharashtra, several cities, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Raigad, are experiencing continuous rainfall and are under Orange and Red alerts.
In a related development, schools in Uttarakhand's Dehradun district have been declared closed due to heavy weather. Schools in Jammu's Dehradun district will also remain closed on September 23 for Maharaja Hari Singh Ji's Birthday.
In contrast, schools in Punjab are functioning normally after recent weather, with only a few low-lying, flood-prone areas remaining cautious of weather changes.
Looking ahead, Telangana schools will have a 13-day Dussehra break from September 21 to October 3. Andhra Pradesh schools will have Dussehra holidays from September 24 to October 2. Karnataka schools will be closed from September 20 to October 6 and reopen on October 7.
Several states have announced extended Dussehra vacations for schools, providing students with a long stretch of holidays before classes resume in October. Eastern states will celebrate Durga Puja on September 29-30. Rajasthan schools will observe Navratri Sthapana on September 22.
In a significant development, the Indian regions that potentially announced last-minute school closures on September 16, 2025, due to further heavy weather were Jammu and Kashmir in the Himalaya area. Heavy monsoon weather caused landslides, flooding, and damage to infrastructure, prompting authorities to close schools for safety.
In conclusion, the weather situation across several parts of India remains unpredictable, with heavy weather and thunderstorms causing disruptions in various regions. Parents and students are advised to stay updated with the latest weather updates and school closure announcements.
