Oberlin College Kicks Off Welcome Week and Orientation

Get ready for an exciting start to the academic year at Oberlin College! The much-anticipated Welcome Week and Orientation begin on Wednesday, August 27th, coinciding with the first day of classes.

This event-packed period is designed to help students build social connections, navigate their classes, and familiarise themselves with campus resources. Orientation activities will take place both virtually from August 11-20 and in person from August 22.

During this time, students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of sessions aimed at orienting them to Oberlin's academic and social life. For instance, PALS (Peer Advocates for Learning and Success) and ConPALS (Continuing PALS) will lead cohorts of students, guiding them through the intricacies of college life.

In addition, student-athletes will assist with move-in at various residence halls, wearing team jerseys and black and white baseball caps. This is a great opportunity for new students to meet their athletic peers and get a feel for campus life.

Transfer students are expected to participate in all required orientation events, and there are added programs specifically for them, highlighted in blue on the schedule. RAs (Resident Assistants) will also help build community in the residence halls during Orientation.

For those interested in employment opportunities, Oberlin College offers a wide range of jobs for students to gain job skills and knowledge for their professional lives. Last year, over 1,700 students held campus jobs. To work on campus, students need to bring federally required employment authorization documents to the Student Employment Office.

Direct deposit is a condition of employment and can be set up in OberView. For detailed guidance on the employment process and the required documentation, students typically receive instructions during their new hire orientation or from the Student Employment Office directly.

Oberlin College is committed to fostering an inclusive community and promoting equity. Orientation will introduce students to Oberlin and the City of Cleveland, as well as the school's commitment towards equity, and important policies.

For any questions about Orientation or Welcome Week, contact Director of Student Involvement and Orientation, Tina Zwegat. Early arrival for orientation starts with football on August 12.

Student Natalie Scott '26 shares that her student jobs have provided resume experience, improved interpersonal skills, and introduced her to college research resources. So, don't miss out on this chance to kickstart your Oberlin journey!

Discover the diverse range of resources available for your personal and academic growth during Welcome Week and Orientation, including sessions on home-and-garden, education-and-self-development, and lifestyle.
