Renowned Journalist Ruth Weiss Dies at 101

Renowned journalist and author Ruth Weiss has passed away at the age of 101. Born in Fürth in 1924, Weiss spent her childhood in Aschaffenburg. She fought against the apartheid regime in South Africa, meeting figures like Nelson Mandela, and was awarded for her activism and literary work.

Weiss, a Jew, emigrated to South Africa in 1936. There, she became a prominent journalist and author, advocating against apartheid. She returned to Germany regularly, visiting her former school, the Girls' Realschule Aschaffenburg, from 1999 onwards. In 2010, the school was renamed the Ruth-Weiss-Realschule in her honor.

Her activism earned her the South African national order 'Companion of O. R. Tambo' in 2023 and the Federal Cross of Merit in 2014. In 2024, she received the Great Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Ruth-Weiss Society was founded in 2019 to maintain her work and the values it stands for.

Weiss passed away on September 5, 2024, after celebrating her 100th birthday in Aschaffenburg earlier that year. Her legacy as a journalist, author, and activist continues to inspire.
