In the heart of Russia, the city of Nizhny Novgorod is undergoing a transformation. The governor's initiative budgeting project, "It's Up to You!", is inviting residents to take an active role in improving their community.

The mayor, Yuri Shalaev, has emphasised the potential of the project, stating that it provides a fantastic opportunity for residents to enhance their courtyards, streets, parks, schools, or sports grounds. Residents can submit their proposals for the project at vam.golosza.ru by September 15, 2025.

The "It's Up to You!" project is not the only initiative in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Several major projects are either completed or underway. For instance, a top-class IT campus with 18 premises accommodating 1,300 people has been completed, hosting the 2025 World Youth Festival Assembly with participants from 110 countries.

Under national projects, 34 new schools for 30,000 children and 47 kindergartens are being built, along with a school for gifted children. The reconstruction of Nizhny Novgorod’s sewage treatment station is nearing completion, addressing the needs of the region and the whole Volga basin.

A "Health Town" including a cancer treatment center is planned, and infrastructure projects funded through budget loans include construction of metro tunnels and replacement of local public transport rolling stock. These initiatives, along with more than 200 federally funded projects across the region, aim to improve urban development and infrastructure.

One such success story under the "It's Up to You!" project is the renovation of Gymnasium No. 13 in the Nizhny Novgorod district. The proposal for the renovation came from parents and teachers who submitted an application for the project. The renovation included the removal of worn-out structures and flooring, repair of walls, ceilings, ventilation, and lighting systems, and installation of new windows, doors, and lighting.

Nataliya Anishchenko, director of Gymnasium No. 13, expressed her excitement about the renovation, stating that it has given the school a new lease on life. Alexei Rybakovlev, head of the Nizhny Novgorod district, announced that the renovation of Gymnasium No. 13 is the last of seven projects planned for implementation in the district under the "It's Up to You!" project by 2025.

This year, other projects under the "It's Up to You!" project included the building of a running track at school No. 22, installation of a basketball court at school No. 42, renovation of a multi-purpose sports court at school No. 19, and repair of surfaces at schools No. 35 and kindergarten No. 477.

Svetlana Dosaeva, curator of the "Social District" project, praised the governor's "It's Up to You!" project as a successful example of constructive cooperation between Nizhny Novgorod residents and city and district administrations. She believes that the longer the project exists, the more new, modern facilities and spaces will appear in Nizhny Novgorod.

The renovation was completed by September 1st, allowing children returning from vacation to use the updated facilities. The district head, Alexei Rybakovlev, also discussed further landscaping of the territory with residents of nearby houses.

By encouraging residents to participate in the "It's Up to You!" project, the city of Nizhny Novgorod is fostering a sense of community involvement and pride. With a budget of 1.2 billion rubles set for 2026, the future of the project looks bright, promising continued improvements and modernisation in the city.
