The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School has made a significant stride in the realm of quantitative finance with the launch of its first new degree offering in 50 years: the Dr. Bruce I. Jacobs Master of Science in Quantitative Finance (MSQF) program. This ambitious initiative is made possible by a generous $60 million gift from philanthropist and Wharton alumnus Dr. Bruce I. Jacobs.

Dr. Jacobs, who co-founded Jacobs Levy Equity Management and serves as its principal, co-chief investment officer, portfolio manager, and co-director of research, has a long-standing commitment to quantitative finance initiatives at Wharton. His contributions now total over $80 million.

The MSQF program is designed for Penn students with a quantitative background and career aspirations in quantitative asset management and allied fields. It combines a rigorous, data-intensive curriculum with practical experience and exposure to industry leaders.

Students will complete six required courses and can choose from over 30 electives. In their final semester, they will engage in a hands-on research project addressing a real-world challenge currently faced by quantitative asset management firms.

Throughout the program, students will gain exposure to practitioners, regulators, and other market participants. The program's inaugural cohort will begin their studies in fall 2026.

David Musto, the Ronald O. Perelman Professor in Finance and faculty director of the MSQF program, expressed his belief that the new program will have a lasting impact on the industry and many future generations of students. He is confident that the Wharton School will remain at the forefront of the dynamic field of quantitative finance.

In addition to the MSQF program, Dr. Jacobs has established the Dr. Bruce I. Jacobs Professorship in Quantitative Finance and the Dr. Bruce I. Jacobs Scholars in Quantitative Finance. He is also the author of several books, including 'Too Smart for Our Own Good: Ingenious Investment Strategies, Illusions of Safety, and Market Crashes' and 'Capital Ideas and Market Realities: Option Replication, Investor Behavior, and Stock Market Crashes'.
