Hellgate High School Faces Ongoing Parking Challenges

As Hellgate High School kicked off the 2025-2026 school year on August 28, students found themselves in a familiar predicament - a challenging parking situation. Despite the lack of designated student parking lots, many students arrive early to secure spots in the drop-off zone on Gerald Street.

The drop-off zone, however, has been a source of frustration for students. A white curb, 20-30 feet long, painted outside the school, is marked as 'pickup and drop off only- no parking'. Yet, students find themselves receiving yellow ticket envelopes on their parked cars. Ella Lambert, a senior at Hellgate, was among those who received a warning ticket for parking in the drop-off zone.

The underused drop-off zone on Gerald Street is more frequently used by students being dropped off at the school bus loading zone on the other side of the street. This situation has led to a proposed solution - to remove the drop-off zone on Gerald Street and move the sign to the school bus loading zone on the opposite side of the street.

Unlike Big Sky and Sentinel, Hellgate students do not have a designated lot for parking. This lack of designated parking spaces has been a point of frustration for Ella Lambert and other students. The congestion in the morning parking situation is further exacerbated by construction on Connell Street, which prevents students from parking there.

Teachers at Hellgate, however, have a designated lot for parking. This discrepancy has led to suggestions for possible solutions to the parking problem at Hellgate High School. One such solution could have been to expand parking facilities or implement staggered start times to reduce congestion and improve the morning parking situation for worried students.

Despite these suggestions, the issue with parking tickets in the drop-off zone remains unresolved. Until the sign is moved and it's accepted to park there, students will continue to receive tickets. The parking situation at Hellgate High School remains challenging, but with ongoing discussions and potential solutions, hope remains for a more effective parking system for rushed teenagers in the morning.
