Punjab Launches Flood Damage Survey as More Rain Threatens
A comprehensive survey has begun in Punjab to assess the damage caused by recent floods, which have affected millions of people and livestock. The survey, set to be completed within a month, will cover all 27 districts and 69 tehsils of the province. Meanwhile, more rain is expected to hit Punjab in the coming days, with showers anticipated to begin early tomorrow morning and continue until October 7 in the northern parts.
The survey, initiated on September 27, aims to gather detailed information about the impact of the floods. It will help authorities understand the extent of the damage and plan relief and rehabilitation efforts accordingly. The search for specific names of decision-makers involved in payment disbursements is ongoing, but no concrete information has been provided yet.
The weather department has warned of heavy rainfall in the region. The intensity of showers is expected to increase on October 6 and 7, with 50 to 70 mm of rain anticipated in northern and northeastern Punjab, extending into central districts. The Chenab river has already recorded inflows of 20,000 cusecs at Head Marala and is expected to surge to 100,000 to 150,000 cusecs in the next 48 hours due to rainfall and silt flushing at the Dul Hasti hydropower project.
The floods have had a devastating effect, affecting 4.7 million people and leading to the evacuation of 2.63 million people and 2.11 million livestock. The death toll has reached 134, but officials expect this number to rise as the survey progresses. Loss and damage assessments are being carried out in 27 flood-affected districts after the Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers breached their banks.
Punjab is bracing for more rainfall in the coming days, with a Western Disturbance likely to intensify from October 3 and persist until October 7. Authorities are working tirelessly to assess the damage caused by the floods and provide relief to the affected population. The survey, once completed, will provide a clearer picture of the situation and help in planning the recovery process.
