Polish 'Anti-Gender' Mobilisations Spark Resilience and Civic Engagement
In Poland, 'anti-gender' mobilisations have had unintended consequences, fostering stronger civic engagement and self-organisation among participants. Despite facing attacks and burnout, resilient individuals have found resilience through community support and love.
The term 'anti-gender' was seen as an umbrella term masking various forms of oppression, with participants preferring terms like patriarchy, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, and xenophobia. Magda described these mobilisations as an ideological offensive contributing to social polarisation.
Participants experienced attacks and intimidation, but found joy and resilience through love, care, friendship, and community spaces. Intra-community divides were noted, including transphobic and sex-work exclusionary voices, generational differences, and double standards in intersectional inclusion. Despite these challenges, LGBTIQ+ individual and cishet women have shown remarkable resilience and resistance, as highlighted by Adrianna Zabrzewska and Roberto Kulpa.
Populists and nationalists have weaponised gender and sexual identity issues to erode democracy and rally support through fearmongering. Meanwhile, the RESIST Project in Poland, funded by European, Swiss, and British research agencies, focuses on social innovation and climate adaptation, fostering a vibrant counter-narrative of belonging and friendship among pro-LGBTIQ+ and pro-feminist communities.
While 'anti-gender' mobilisations have sparked social polarisation, they have also unintentionally strengthened civic engagement and self-organisation. Despite facing adversity, resilient Polish LGBTIQ+ individual and cishet women have shown remarkable resilience and community support, challenging populist narratives and fostering a sense of belonging.
