Penn School of Social Policy & Practice re-appoints Sara S. 'Sally' Bachman as its dean
Dean Sara S. "Sally" Bachman's leadership at the School of Social Policy & Practice (SP2) has been commended, and her term has been extended until June 30, 2031, pending approval by the Board of Trustees.
President J. Larry Jameson and Provost John L. Jackson Jr. announced the extension, praising Bachman's accomplishments and the growth, innovation, and resilience she has brought to SP2. The decision follows a comprehensive evaluation by the Consultative Review Committee, which included six faculty members, two students, and one alumnus.
One of Bachman's most notable achievements is the launch of the Practice Doctorate in Nonprofit Administration, a school-wide effort that demonstrates her commitment to ambitious and mission-critical initiatives. She has also introduced innovative programs such as the certificate in Applied Data Ethics, Law, and the Social Good, and advanced curricular initiatives in philanthropy and climate resilience.
Under her leadership, SP2 has doubled its sponsored research revenue and reduced tuition dependency. Bachman has also advanced academic excellence and expanded the faculty at SP2, including its first Penn Integrates Knowledge (PIK) faculty appointment.
The Consultative Review Committee conducted a thorough evaluation of Bachman's accomplishments and the challenges facing SP2 for the next five years. They unanimously praised her work, highlighting her approachable and inclusive leadership style that fosters a culture of collaboration, innovation, and care among staff, students, and faculty at SP2.
President J. Larry Jameson states, "Dean Sara S. 'Sally' Bachman has demonstrated calm, principled, and effective leadership at SP2. She has led the School through a period of growth, innovation, and resilience." Provost John L. Jackson Jr. adds, "We are delighted that Dean Bachman will continue her leadership of Penn SP2."
The Board of Trustees will receive a resolution to reappoint Dean Sara S. "Sally" Bachman at its next meeting. The new term, if approved, will mark a significant milestone in Bachman's tenure as Dean of SP2.
The extension of Bachman's term is in support of the objectives articulated in the University's strategic framework, In Principle and Practice. It is a testament to her dedication to the School and her commitment to advancing the work of SP2.
With Bachman at the helm, SP2 continues to thrive, contributing significantly to the University's mission of education, research, and service.
