Notification: Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Education Established

The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, formerly known as the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, has undergone a significant transformation. As of January 1, 2019, the prestigious music education organization will bear the name of its long-standing Board Chairman, the legendary jazz pianist Herbie Hancock [1].

This change comes following a proposal by the Board of Trustees and a request from representatives of the Monk Estate regarding the continued use of Thelonious Monk's name [2]. Herbie Hancock, a 14-time GRAMMY Award winner and Academy Award winner, has dedicated over three decades of his life to the Institute, serving as its Chairman for the past 15 years [3].

The Institute's mission remains unchanged, with the Board of Trustees, ongoing education programs, and events continuing as usual. The Institute's commitment to jazz as a means to unite people of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities remains steadfast [4].

The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz offers college-level training to young musicians by internationally acclaimed jazz masters. This training is provided free of charge, reflecting the Institute's dedication to fostering talent without financial barriers [5].

One of the Institute's groundbreaking initiatives is "Math, Science and Music." This program aims to preserve, perpetuate, and expand jazz as a global art form by integrating it with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education [6].

The Institute also provides public school-based music education programs for young people worldwide. These programs promote jazz as a living art form and foster appreciation of its cultural legacy [1].

Herbie Hancock, as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, is deeply involved in the Institute's activities. His lead program is International Jazz Day, which is produced in conjunction with the Institute, the United Nations, and UNESCO [7].

Mr. Hancock will remain fully involved, serving as an instructor and mentor, working with the students on improvisation and composition, and performing with the students in Los Angeles, across the United States, and internationally [8]. The Board of Trustees strongly believes that Mr. Hancock is the perfect choice to ensure continuity, stability, and vision for the Institute's future [9].
