Northeast Summit 2025 Surges Forward: Prime Minister Modi Labels Northeast India as the Nation's Fresh Growth Motor, Emphasizes Intensified Agriculture, Commerce, and Connectivity Boost

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Rising North East Investors Summit 2025 in New Delhi on May 23, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the region's development. The event was graced by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia, governors, and chief ministers of all eight Northeastern states.

The summit, a movement and a rallying cry for India's inclusive development, highlighted the Northeast as a critical source of energy and a hub for eco-tourism, organic farming, bamboo, tea industries, and energy resources. PM Modi emphasized the region's unique position and its potential to contribute significantly to India's vision of becoming a developed nation.

Organic farming in Northeast India, supported by strong government policies, subsidy schemes, and indigenous practices, is making notable contributions to the regional economy and its sustainable growth prospects. The region leverages traditional agricultural knowledge, abundant organic inputs, and favourable agro-climatic conditions to promote organic cultivation, which enhances food security, generates income, and supports rural livelihoods.

Policy and institutional support, such as the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER), offers subsidies, training, certification support, and infrastructure development aimed at facilitating organic farming and market linkages in Northeast India. The organic sector contributes to employment generation and income diversification, particularly through high-value crops like organic tea and spices that have strong export potential.

The summit also emphasized the Northeast as a potential center for eco-tourism, destination weddings, and cultural tourism. Guwahati, Imphal, and Agartala were highlighted as emerging multi-modal logistics hubs in the Northeast, set to boost trade and logistics.

Infrastructure support like food parks, cold storage, and labs are being developed to support food processing industries. Thousands of crores have been invested in solar and hydropower projects in the Northeast, with India's first semiconductor chip from a Northeast-based plant soon to be launched.

PM Modi spotlighted the Northeast's role in making India a global food brand, with organic produce gaining international recognition. He also praised the rise of startups and digital innovation in the region, calling it India's emerging digital gateway.

The Northeast Gas Grid was mentioned as a project that will provide consistent energy for industries. The region was emphasized as a vital contributor to India's vision of becoming a developed nation.

PM Modi reaffirmed the government's commitment to key projects like the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway and the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Project, which are set to boost trade and logistics. He encouraged stakeholders to tap into the region's natural biodiversity and organic living to create a globally appealing wellness destination.

Over the past decade, over 10,000 youth have given up arms and embraced peace, a testament to the transformative effects of peace agreements and developmental outreach in the region. The Northeast was promoted as a key pillar of the "Heal in India" initiative for wellness tourism.

The government's vision for the Northeast region is to Empower, Act, Strengthen, and Transform (EAST), a commitment reflected in the numerous developmental initiatives and investments announced at the Rising North East Investors Summit 2025.
