NKU & NKCAC Launch Senior Workforce Program for Job Skills & Career Advancement

Northern Kentucky University (NKU) and the Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission (NKCAC) have joined forces to launch the Senior Workforce Program. Funded by AmeriCorps, this initiative aims to equip adults aged 55 and older with essential skills for today's job market, while supporting their personal and professional development.

The program, which began with an AmeriCorps grant, offers in-person courses at NKU. These include digital literacy and financial management, which are crucial for success in the modern workplace. Participants can earn college credits from NKU and complete the program in two years or less.

Lee Kersting, chair of the Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance at NKU's Haile College of Business, commends the initiative for its accessibility. He believes it empowers students regardless of age or background. Jennifer Bastress Tahmasebi, interim agency head for AmeriCorps, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of such programs for older Americans to adapt to a changing economy.

The Senior Workforce Program also provides personalized support services. These include career counseling, job placement assistance, and access to NKU's network of employers and industry partners. Rhonda Chisenhall, vice president of community development for NKCAC, is enthusiastic about the partnership with NKU. She sees the program as a way to help low to moderate-income seniors gain education and work experience for a livable wage job in the financial industry.

The Senior Workforce Program, a collaborative effort between NKU and NKCAC, funded by AmeriCorps, is making higher education and career advancement more accessible to adults aged 55 and older. By offering relevant courses and comprehensive support services, the program is helping seniors gain the skills and experience needed to succeed in today's job market and secure a livable wage.
