Zohran Mamdani, a progressive Muslim immigrant, is making waves in the political landscape of New York City as the Democratic nominee for the mayoral race in 2025. Before entering politics, Mamdani "dipped his toe into hip-hop" under the name "Mr Cardamom" and worked as a foreclosure-prevention counsellor in Queens.
If elected, Mamdani will be the first Muslim, youngest, and first immigrant mayor of New York City in decades. Trump has referred to Mamdani as a "100% communist lunatic". Mamdani has pledged to honor an ICC warrant by arresting Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit New York City. Despite attempts by his opponents to criticize him for his views on the Israel-Palestine conflict, Mamdani has faced no significant backlash so far.
