New Rules for International Students in Canada: PGWP Changes in November 2024
International students in Canada have new rules to follow for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). From November 2024, they must attend a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) offering eligible programs to qualify. This change aims to ensure students work in fields that contribute to Canada's economy.
PGWPs are Open Work Permits (OWPs) allowing graduates to work for most employers in most industries. They are issued for eight months to three years, depending on the program's length. To be eligible, students must maintain full-time status throughout their studies and meet certain conditions.
Students must obtain a transcript and an official letter from their DLI confirming they've completed their program. They should check the IRCC DLI List page to confirm their school's status. PGWPs can be crucial for students aiming to build eligibility for Canadian permanent residence programs like the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
Starting November 2024, international students must ensure their school is a DLI offering an eligible program. They should plan their studies accordingly and maintain full-time status to qualify for a PGWP after graduation. This permit can significantly enhance their chances of staying in Canada permanently.
