Austrian Federal Army Deploys Soldiers to Combat African Swine Fever at Slovakian Border
In a unique operation, the Austrian Federal Army has deployed 28 soldiers to two border crossings in Lower Austria to help combat the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF). The operation, which began on Monday afternoon, is scheduled to last until May 20.
The soldiers' task is not related to defense against an armed enemy. Instead, they are tasked with keeping disinfectant mats soaked with formic acid moist using watering cans. These disinfectant mats are strategically located at the border crossings.
The operation is a response to the outbreak of ASF in neighbouring Slovakia and Hungary. So far, test results in Burgenland and Lower Austria have been negative. The Federal Army is responsible for the disinfection measures at these border crossings.
Initially, soldiers from the Guard were deployed, but they will be relieved by an assistance unit of militia soldiers from the Military Command of Lower Austria on April 27. The relief of soldiers from the Guard was reported by ORF.
The operation was requested by the province and is part of a broader effort to keep ASF in check. The Federal Army's role in this operation is not related to defense against an armed enemy.
This is not the first time the Austrian Federal Army has been involved in biosecurity or border support during an animal disease outbreak. In the past, they have cooperated with civilian authorities in such operations.
