Marketing Department at Whitman School receives new leadership: Julie Niederhoff appointed as Chair.

Julie Niederhoff, an acclaimed researcher in the field of supply chain management, has been appointed as the new chair of the marketing department at the Whitman School. Effective from August 4, she succeeds S.P. Raj, who will return to the faculty full-time after many years of dedicated service.

Niederhoff's research interests lie in the role of individual-level human bias in decision-making within supply chains. She investigates how these biases impact system performance in both for-profit and humanitarian contexts. To explore this, she employs methodologies from experimental economics, behavioral game theory, and psychology, measuring personal preferences and group dynamics to understand their influence on individual and team performance in areas such as manufacturing, inventory control, and contracting.

Her work aims to better understand the human impact of supply chain decision-making and connects behavioral insights to supply chain decision-making and performance outcomes. Over the years, her research has been published in top research journals such as Management Science, European Journal of Operations Research, and Production and Operations Management. It has also been featured by reputable media outlets like The New York Times, Science Daily, NBC Nightly News, CNBC, CNN, NPR, and Scientific America.

At the Whitman School, Niederhoff teaches core courses in supply chain for undergraduate students, as well as electives for students pursuing supply chain management, logistics, and management science. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she serves as the co-director of the H.H. Franklin Center for Supply Chain and the Harry Salzberg Memorial Program.

Niederhoff holds a master's degree and Ph.D. in operations management from the John M. Olin School of Business at Washington University. She has been associated with the Whitman School since 2007 and has served as an editorial review board member of the Journal of Operations Management, a guest associate editor of Decision Sciences, and an ad hoc reviewer of the International Journal of Production Economics, Manufacturing and Service Operations Management, IEEE Transactions, and the European Journal of Operations Research.

Dean McKelvie expressed gratitude for Raj's years of service to the department and his continued willingness to serve in a leadership role. He also welcomed Niederhoff, expressing excitement about her leadership of the marketing department and looking forward to working with colleagues from marketing, supply chain, and retail.

The Department of Marketing at the Whitman School offers marketing, retail, and supply chain management programs. With Niederhoff at the helm, the department is poised to continue its commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service.
