In the heart of Belarus, a remarkable story unfolds. Dana Semchenko, a former journalist, found herself in the midst of a challenging journey after being imprisoned.

Dana was initially assigned to work in a fabric cutting workshop in Gomel's women's colony, performing physically demanding tasks with a manual, heavy saw. Her cell in Gomel's SIZO was a concrete transit cell with iron bunks, making it impossible for her to sleep comfortably. The tap in her cell didn't work, making it difficult for her to drink water, and her loss of appetite due to stress further compounded her struggles.

During her imprisonment, Dana received only partial letters from her relatives, leaving her feeling disconnected. The elderly women in the colony were in a poor emotional state, with negative thoughts, worrying about their families and grandchildren. One of her cellmates would mutter to herself at night, walk around the cell, and draw supposed crosses on the walls, which Dana found disturbing.

A disturbing incident occurred in Bobruisk's SIZO where a girl was returned bald, leading Dana to believe she was shaved due to lice. Political prisoners in Belarus reported that ordinary criminals went on a hunger strike to improve conditions for political prisoners.

Despite the hardships, Dana found solace in her hobby of making aromatizers out of light bulbs, filling them with dried flowers and essential oils. Upon her release, Dana felt sad about being left behind by her classmates who had graduated and started their careers. However, she was determined to move forward.

Dana stayed at a safe house in Lithuania after leaving Belarus. Her friends suggested she write a petition for clemency one and a half months before her release. Now, Dana intends to study abroad at a university, considering fields such as philology, veterinary medicine, or choreography.

Dmitry Semchenko, a former Lukashenko pool politico, also left Belarus, joining Dana in her new journey. Dana misses Belarus but is glad to be free. She is grateful for the support she received from her friends and relatives, and looks forward to a brighter future.

Visits were made to a shelter that provides a roof for political prisoners forced to leave Belarus after the New Year, offering a glimmer of hope for those still in dire circumstances. The story of Dana Semchenko serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
