Lehigh University Students Obtain Intimate Insights into International Relations on United Nations Collaboration Journey

Lehigh University Students Gain Insight into Global Diplomacy and Policy

In a unique opportunity, Lehigh University students were given a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of global diplomacy, philanthropy, and security on April 25, 2023, in New York City. This was the 20th year of Lehigh's United Nations partnership, a programme that has expanded access for undergraduate and graduate students seeking to engage with global issues firsthand.

The day started at the Ford Foundation headquarters, where students had a discussion with Jeh Johnson, a former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security. This was followed by a fireside chat with Darren Walker, President of the Ford Foundation. The students later met with Acting U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Dorothy Shea at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations.

Ambassador Rich Verma, Lehigh's President's Distinguished Fellow, played a pivotal role in coordinating the day's events and personally led the delegation. The itinerary offered students an opportunity to engage directly with influential figures shaping national and international policy.

The event was not just a learning experience for the students, but also a stepping stone towards their future careers. Many students involved in the programme pursue careers in diplomacy, international development, journalism, and public policy. Claire Eckroat '28, an international relations and environmental studies double major, found the U.N. program influential in her decision to attend Lehigh.

Over the years, the UN program has provided undergraduates with unparalleled opportunities to speak on global platforms and deliver programmes. In 2008, Lehigh became the first university to request official UN credentials for students to serve on behalf of accredited NGOs. Since then, over 200 Lehigh students have served as UN Youth Representatives, participating in official UN activities.

The UN program's commitment is to immersive, interdisciplinary learning. It is designed to broaden academic learning and open doors to professional pathways with real-world exposure. As part of a specialized event focused on journalism and global communication, student journalists will attend the UN Secretary-General's press conference.

This event underscores Lehigh University's commitment to preparing students for global leadership roles. As one of the most involved universities in the world with the United Nations, Lehigh continues to provide its students with opportunities to step onto the world stage while still in college. The students returned from New York City with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of the complex issues shaping our world news today.
