Forest School Leaders Course: A Comprehensive Ten-Day Journey

The course, aimed at individuals who wish to lead a Forest School programme, will take place at the picturesque Foxburrow Nature Reserve (IP12 1NA) and is facilitated by Forest School Association (FSA) Registered Forest School Trainers.
Course Details
The course consists of five units: Practical Skills, Planning and Preparation, Woodland Environment, Delivery, and Learning and Development. Participants will delve into the forest school ethos and philosophy, learn how to plan and lead engaging outdoor learning activities, master risk assessment and health & safety, and understand child development and learning outcomes.
Practical skills such as tool use, fire lighting, shelter building, and natural crafts will also be covered, along with reflection and professional development.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment criteria usually include written assignments or portfolios demonstrating understanding of theory and practical application, evidence of planning and delivering Forest School sessions, reflective journals or logs on personal experience and learner outcomes, practical assessments or observations demonstrating competence in outdoor leader skills, and risk assessments and safeguarding documentation.
Course Requirements
Participants should be over 21 and hold a qualification at Level 2 or above in teaching or youth work, or have significant experience of working with young people. People with limited mobility should contact the organizer in advance.
Participants should bring a packed lunch, cup, snacks, suitable outdoor clothing, stout shoes or boots, and a camera. Hot drinks, all required paperwork, all tools and equipment for the outdoor tasks, and additional facilities will be provided. However, participants should not bring their own tools.
Course Logistics
The course time is 9:30am - 5:30pm each day. The course dates are 13th-17th October 2025, 11th-13th November 2025, and 24th-25th November 2025. Participants are required to read and agree to the terms and conditions and Learner Agreement before booking. Hand in dates for each unit are set at regular intervals throughout the 12 months following the teaching days.

Additional Information
The coursework is submitted and marked using the platform Moodle. Participants must hold a First Aid certificate before delivering Forest School. A 16-hour First Aid with an outdoor element is recommended. The course is not suitable for dogs, except for assistance dogs. If you have completed AIM accredited Level 2 Forest School training within 18 months of the start of the Level 3 course, you can top up to a Level 3.
