Laptops distributed to Alexandria students following summer learning initiative by Code Rising
Code Rising, a nonprofit organisation based in Alexandria, has concluded its second annual summer camp this month. Founded two years ago with the goal of helping underprivileged kids learn about STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) subjects, the organisation has made significant strides in providing opportunities for students who may be underestimated or excluded from these opportunities in the city.
This year's summer camp was aimed at underprivileged students in Alexandria, with participants coming from elementary, middle, and high school. The camp was organised at three locations every day, with partners Continues Arcade, Cafe Pizzaolio, and Grace Episcopal Church providing their facilities. The City of Alexandria and Titan Robotics also lent their support to Code Rising's programs.
The summer camp provided an introduction to STEAM education, with students learning coding, making short movies, and creating video games. In addition, Code Rising distributed new laptops to the students at the end of their summer camp. High school students received MacBooks, while elementary and middle school students received Chromebooks.
Amazon, Dominion Energy, ACT for Alexandria, and other donors provided support for Code Rising's programs. Weekly field trips were also organised as part of the summer camp, including a visit to Continues Arcade in Old Town.
Michelle Millben, the CEO of Code Rising, expressed gratitude for the community's support and partnerships. She stated, "We are grateful for the support we have received from our partners and the community. Our mission is to create opportunities for students who may be underestimated or excluded from STEAM opportunities in the city."
Code Rising aims to equip students with the skills, tools, and confidence to thrive in college and in high-wage, high-growth careers. In line with this, the organisation launched a high school pre-apprenticeship program this year with Casa Chirilagua and Space of Her Own (SOHO).
The fall program will start next month, with students participating after school and on weekends. Code Rising distributed a $1,125 scholarship to each participant from the organisations, with the aim of helping them continue their STEAM education beyond the summer camp.
Michelle Millben concluded by saying, "We are excited to continue our mission of providing opportunities for underprivileged students in Alexandria. We are grateful for the support we have received and look forward to seeing the impact our programs have on the lives of these students."
