Introducing David Linehan, the Innovative New CEO and Dean at Our Institution

David C. Linehan, MD, a renowned surgical oncologist and accomplished surgeon-scientist, has been appointed as the CEO of the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

A graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Linehan brings a wealth of experience in medical education, healthcare administration, and policy leadership to his new role. His appointment reflects the university's commitment to academic excellence and strategic institutional planning.

As CEO and dean, Linehan will oversee the institution's operations and guide its response to evolving healthcare and federal legislative changes affecting academic health care systems and research funding. He is actively engaged in communicating with faculty and staff about the impact of healthcare legislation on the university and medical center, demonstrating his leadership in managing strategic institutional challenges.

Linehan's leadership focus extends beyond operational matters. He is deeply committed to mentorship and academic leadership, having benefited significantly from key mentors throughout his career. He has developed successful clinical programs in Surgery and has taught and mentored a wide range of trainees.

In his previous role at URMC, Linehan chaired the Department of Surgery for the past 10 years. He is internationally renowned for his research into new immunotherapy treatments for pancreatic cancer. His laboratory has been continuously funded by the National Cancer Institute for nearly two decades.

Linehan's research into immunotherapies for patients with hard-to-treat cancers has been a significant contribution to the field. He completed a research fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and was the Kristin Ann Carr Fellow in Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Linehan is a prolific bench-to-bedside scientist at UR Medicine's Wilmot Cancer Institute. He has attracted and promoted the growth of surgeon-scientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He specialized in treating cancers and benign surgical conditions of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and bile ducts.

Linehan is excited to begin his new role and work with the dedicated people across the organization to improve health throughout the region. He believes that integrating the strengths of the University, UR Medicine health system, and medical and nursing schools will help the medical center confront the challenges it faces today.

As the top executive of the University's vast clinical enterprise, which includes UR Medicine, the School of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Nursing, and Eastman Institute for Oral Health, Linehan is poised to lead the university and medical center into a new era of innovation and excellence.
