India's Push Toward a Digital Age: The Journey of Fiber Optics
At the recently concluded Broadband India Summit 2025, held at Hotel Shangri-La, New Delhi, key industry players gathered to discuss the future of broadband in India. The event, themed "Connecting the Unconnected: Bridging the Gaps with Wireline, Wireless, and Satellite Solutions", brought together influential policymakers, telecom operators, infrastructure enablers, and tech pioneers.
Mr. Sachin Deshpande, CTO of Tata Play Fiber, emphasised Tata's commitment to digital empowerment and expanding access to world-class internet. He discussed the latest advancements and innovations in broadband infrastructure in India, focusing on next-generation fiber networks, 5G deployment, and satellite internet solutions to achieve truly cutting-edge connectivity for a digitally inclusive future.
Next-gen fiber technologies aiming to expand ultra-high-speed broadband coverage across urban and rural areas were a significant part of the discussion. These fiber optic enhancements are critical to supporting India’s rapidly growing internet user base and data demand.
5G networks, providing faster, more reliable wireless broadband, were also a topic of interest. The summit emphasised the need for accelerating 5G infrastructure rollouts, vital for smart cities, IoT, and industrial digital transformation.
Satellite broadband solutions were discussed as a means to bridge connectivity gaps, especially in rural and remote regions. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) positions satellite internet as a key enabler to connect 40,000 additional gram panchayats and millions of rural households with high-speed internet.
The broadband infrastructure push is supported by major government investments, such as an additional USD 18 billion to expand rural internet coverage through BharatNet and related programs.
Puneet Garg, President and Group Wireline CTO of Reliance Jio, highlighted the company's mission to deliver world-class broadband to every corner of India. Other speakers at the summit included Mr. Gopa Kumar Krishna, CEO of RANext Technologies, and various other industry leaders.
India is entering a new era of connectivity, with satellite broadband coming to India, according to Mr. Shashi Dharan, Managing Director of Bharat Exhibitions. BSNL's Director (CFA), Vivek Banzal, was the Chief Guest of the Summit and emphasised the importance of BSNL as a digital enabler in India's journey towards Broadband for All.
The summit was supported and partnered by various organisations, including WiSig Networks, Commscope, RANext Technologies, Techspire Services, 6D Technologies, Astrome Technologies, LMES iConnectWe, Shaildhar Telecom, Saartek, Syrotech Networks, Communications Today, The Marcom Avenue, ITU-APT Foundation of India, Indian Space Association, and Broadband India Forum.
The Ministry of Home Affairs' Director, Sanjay Agrawal, was the Guest of Honour and spoke about the transformation of public services through broadband and the need for cybersecurity, data protection, and digital literacy. Prof. Kiran Kuchi, Founder of WiSig Networks and Professor at IIT Hyderabad, talked about the convergence of multiple technologies, especially in the infrastructure sector, and the importance of BharatNet and fiber-to-the-home initiatives for achieving last-mile connectivity.
Rahul Vatts, Director - OneWeb India and Chief Regulatory Officer of Bharti Airtel, discussed the emerging role of satellite broadband in India and Bharti Airtel's moves in the satellite broadband space. Shri Arun Agrawal, DDG (Satellite) of the Department of Telecommunications, Smt. Padma Jaiswal, IAS, Secretary to the Government of Puducherry, and other eminent panelists and speakers from multiple industry verticals were also present at the summit.
