Digital Transition's Pressure on Educators: Unveiling the Challenges They Face - Impact of Digitalisation on Educators: Understanding the Emotional Strain

Education is rapidly advancing, and digitalization is at the heart of this transformation. But with progress comes challenges, especially for teachers who are often tasked with fixing technical issues themselves. "In the era of digitalization, schools are swamped with tech troubles," laments Thilo Hartmann, chairman of the Education and Science Union (GEW) in Hesse.

Teachers expect technology to function smoothly when prepping their lessons. However, setbacks often occur, leaving them with few resources for problem-solving. "When the tech fails, they're usually on their own," Hartmann observes.

At many schools, tech-savvy educators step up to provide IT support. "A handful of teachers lend a hand, occasionally addressing tech issues on the side," Hartmann says. In some cases, students councilors are promoted, given a pay bump, or granted a time reduction. Yet, in numerous schools, especially the smaller ones, the burden lands on top of their existing responsibilities.

Maintaining devices is a time-consuming endeavor

A school with around 1,000 students and over 100 teachers generates a myriad of devices. Managing this array of technology can't be handled carelessly. "In the corporate world, you'd have a dedicated IT department. Schools lack this luxury," Hartmann notes.

Problems range from devices breaking down in computer labs to internet outages. Rapid troubleshooting is imperative to keep lessons on track. Devices require constant updates, ensuring data and system protection, and managing the coordination of numerous systems. This can consume hours and demand continuous learning.

Kassel Steps Up

Recognizing the need for relief, Kassel initiated the "IT Supporter@School" project. The city has hired twelve IT supporters, each assigned to six schools. "Schools can't provide the technical support on their own," says Mayor and Education Commissioner Nicole Maisch (Greens). "These are teachers handling IT concerns in addition to their primary duties."

IT supporter Thorben Schröder explains his role, assuring swift resolution for on-site problems that teachers encounter. He and his colleagues are the schools' primary points of contact and make regular visits, with emergency support on hand whenever needed.

"When my iPad malfunctions, I'm in trouble," admits Carsten Horstmann, deputy headmaster of the Johann-Amos-Comenius School. Having IT supporters grants rapid resolution, saving teachers valuable time. "It's made the experience much more pleasant," he says.

Modern Digital Infrastructure

Kassel's digital infrastructure in schools owes much to the support of the federal and state governments through the Digital Pact I, Maisch explains. The city now aims to furnish 55 schools in Kassel with a reliable digital infrastructure to support teaching, with the goal that teachers can rely on technology and not on unforeseen complications consuming their focus.

The Hessian Ministry of Culture agrees, emphasizing the need to accompany technological evolution successfully. "Digitalization in schools reflects the complexities that accompany the introduction of modern technologies. But substantial progress has been made in areas like adapting existing structures, promoting competencies among stakeholders, and ensuring resources," the ministry explains.

However, the mission isn't complete. "Continuous work is still necessary to successfully navigate this technological development," they add. Progress is ongoing to ensure that digital applications and IT infrastructure relieve teachers while promoting individualized student support.

GEW Sees Progress But Opportunities Remain

According to Hartmann, the rapid advancement of digitization in schools, accelerated by the Corona pandemic, has been substantial but falls short of expectations. Urgent funding is crucial in acknowledging the existing backlog in maintenance and ensuring that aging equipment is replaced in the coming years. Hartmann also advocates for a focus on expanding media education and equal digital equipment across schools.

In the era of digital learning, the emphasis is on nurturing critical digital media competence and ensuring that teachers maintain pedagogical control amidst the advance of automated platforms. By implementing thoughtful initiatives and remaining diligent, schools can better support their teachers as they adapt to the demands of digital education.
