IIT Bombay Professor Resigns to Combat Climate Change Crisis
Professor Chetan Singh Solanki Resigns from IIT Bombay to Lead Global Climate Change Fight
Professor Chetan Singh Solanki, a renowned solar scientist and climate crusader, has announced his resignation from IIT Bombay. His last working day at the prestigious institution is on 23 October 2025.
Over the past two decades, Professor Solanki has contributed significantly to solar energy education and research at IIT Bombay. However, his recent focus has shifted towards combating climate change on a global scale.
In 2020, Professor Solanki started the Energy Swaraj Yatra, a journey aimed at raising awareness about climate change. He traveled 68,000 km across the country, giving over 1,650 lectures on the subject.
The seed of his current purpose was sown with the creation of the Finite Earth Movement, a global initiative to combat climate change. Based on the principle that "On a finite planet, unlimited consumption is not possible," the movement aims to engage about one billion people in climate action in the next three years.
Professor Solanki believes that to stop climate change, we all have to adopt the mantra of "Finite Earth - Finite Consumption." He calls on citizens, institutions, and governments across the world to join the Finite Earth Movement, making sustainable living an international mission.
The Finite Earth Movement can be learned more about and joined at www.thefiniteearth.org.
The Energy Swaraj Yatra is expected to conclude in Dec. 2030. Professor Solanki's call to duty is not just a career change but a commitment to ensure that the limit of 2 degrees Celsius global warming, beyond which climate change will become irreversible, is not reached within the next 20 to 25 years.
Professor Solanki's efforts have earned him the titles of India's "Solar Man" and "Solar Gandhi." His resignation from IIT Bombay marks a new chapter in his crusade against climate change, a battle he is determined to win for the sake of our finite Earth.
