Home-based food projects in Ras Al Khaimah will now be subject to monitoring for food safety standards.
Ras Al Khaimah Municipality has launched a food control programme aimed at enhancing safety standards in home-based food projects. The initiative, which falls under the "Year of Community" initiative, is being coordinated with Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Economic Development.
Last week, an awareness campaign on food safety for home-based businesses was jointly conducted by the Ras Al Khaimah Municipality and the Department of Economic Development. More than 30 holders of the "Ras Al Ghad" home licence participated in the campaign.
The food control programme takes a risk-based regulatory approach, combining education with long-term compliance requirements. Inspections will be carried out using a field-based risk assessment system. Violations will be addressed in stages, starting with reminders and warnings before escalating to fines if necessary.
Orwa Mudathir, Director of the Food Control Department, stated that the programme is the first in Ras Al Khaimah to introduce a participatory model of governance. Both regulators and license holders have defined roles under federal and local legislation in the food control programme.
Aisha Obaid Al Ayyan, Director of Business Development at the Department of Economic Development, emphasised the importance of businesses adhering to municipal safety regulations and cooperating with inspectors. She is involved in the food control programme and organises workshops to reinforce food safety standards in the home-based food and beverage sector.
A regulatory manual has been prepared to outline minimum health and safety requirements tailored to home licenses in the food control programme. The participants received advice on preventive measures, licensing requirements, and project sustainability during the workshops.
The food control programme supports Ras Al Khaimah's Vision 2030. It is designed to help families producing food at home meet approved health standards. Additional awareness workshops covering the food and beverage sector are planned.
Aisha Obaid Al Ayyan highlighted the importance of businesses adhering to municipal safety regulations and cooperating with inspectors. She reiterated that violations will still be addressed in stages, starting with reminders and warnings before escalating to fines if necessary.
The food control programme is a significant step towards ensuring the safety of home-based food projects in Ras Al Khaimah. By combining education, regulation, and a participatory model of governance, the programme aims to promote a safer and healthier food environment for the community.
