Global Fashion Influencer: Avshalom Gur, The Fashion Architect Crafting International Trends
Avshalom Gur, a fashion designer with a unique perspective, has been making waves in the industry for two decades. With a career spanning two decades, Gur has worked with some of the biggest names in fashion, including Chloé, Roberto Cavalli, Donna Karan, and Nicole Farhi.
Gur's designs have been stocked by retail giants such as Saks Fifth Avenue in New York, Harvey Nichols and Harrods in the UK, and more. His eponymous label, Avsh Alom Gur, showcases his rare combination of commercial nous and creative flair.
The British Fashion Council's prestigious NewGen award was bestowed upon Gur's label a record three times, a testament to the quality of his work. His designs have been described as "surefire hits" by the venerable Suzy Menkes.
Gur's approach to fashion is not just about creating beautiful clothes. He sees himself as a "brand doctor," offering services as a consultant, strategist, designer, cheerleader, and more to help fashion businesses achieve their goals.
Gur's belief in understanding the modern Chinese and Middle Eastern woman's wants has led him to work with international fashion companies such as Adidas, Puma, and Esprit. He has also helped grow the Asian luxury brand MARYLING, taking it from a modest annual turnover of 150,000 euros in 2010 to a behemoth with a turnover of 500 million euros annually across womenswear, accessories, and MARYLING caffé chain.
Gur's work with MARYLING resulted in the opening of approximately one outlet a month, leading to just under 300 standalone stores across Asia Pacific. He was also responsible for the revival of the 1970s cult British brand, Ossie Clark, for the 21st-century customer.
Gur's work extends beyond the world of fashion. He has provided consulting support to various companies and has also worked with the Turkish textile manufacturer Kutnia, helping to revive the heritage fabric blend Kutnu as a cultural preservation and social sustainability project.
Gur studied at Central Saint Martins and was mentored by Louise Wilson, considered one of the greatest fashion educators in history. His designs have dressed celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Helen Mirren.
In 2009, Booker Prize nominee Linda Grant immortalized Gur in her non-fiction book, The Thoughtful Dresser. Gur's unique capacity for working within multiple cultures makes him one of the most interesting figures on the scene today; one who is able to shape global style by seeing beyond the industry's inherent Eurocentrism.
Gur values working with great teams and believes it's important to understand the dynamic of an organization and get to the heart of the people running it. His problem-solving requires the same "creative thinking" as design, a transferrable skill he considers key to his success.
